Jan Leike

Jan Leike co-led, until mid-2024, OpenAI's Superalignment team with Ilya Sutskever, in a programme that carried a public commitment of 20% of the company's compute. After the team was dissolved, Leike joined Anthropic, where he co-leads the Alignment Science programme. In January 2026 he published the essay Alignment is not solved but it increasingly looks solvable, a cautious stocktake after a decade of work in the field. The Faking Machine invokes him as a representative figure of the technical establishment that acknowledges the problem and, simultaneously, expresses cautious hope about its tractability.
